In 2020, the world's largest wetland ecosystem burned for over 90 days. Approximately 4.5 million hectares were consumed, with an estimated loss of 17 million animals. José Medeiros, who has been photographing the Pantanal for 30 years, was on the scene when the first fires ignited and remained there until the blazes subsided. Over 90 days, he documented the inferno and battled, alongside hundreds of locals ('pantaneiros'), an elusive monster without a face.
Book | Volume I
Unlike the poetic imagery often associated with the Pantanal, the author documents the aftermath of wildfires and human impact on the world's largest wetland. "Heaven and Hell in Flooded Lands" is the first volume of the Pantanal +10 collection.
